MAKING IT! PRESS RELEASE
Significant Others Productions presents
Making It!
Assembly George Sq., 31 July – 25 August, 14.00
A one-woman comedy drama about making it as an actress with a cast of literally lots!
Jess dreams of treading the boards. Pilar wants to act in a supermarket drama. And Bronwyn’s gone viral on YouTube.
For now, the only boards Jess treads are in the cafe where she works. This is Davina Leonard's writing and Fringe debut in a 60-minute comedy theatre rollercoaster about making coffees and making it! We follow Jess in her search for approval and the right part, through salsa routines, thankless crowd scenes, questionable auditions and pearls of wisdom from a pantomime horse. Five quirky characters, Pilar, Pauline, Jess, Garrick and Bronwyn - all played by Leonard, are brought to life as they talk, debate and even dance with one another. A heartfelt and bittersweet play for anyone trying to make it in the world.
"Leonard is confident, engaging and can command a room ... her delivery is spot-on" (VFTG)
Making It! tackles a number of universal themes such as sexism, competition amongst so-called friends, self-esteem and self-belief, and the burden of parents with low aspirations for their children. The play was written by Leonard based on her own experiences. We see Jess taken in by the unscrupulous, let down by her so-called friends, and ultimately pick herself back up and place herself in a position where she feels she is on the verge of a breakthrough. Or is she?.
"seamless accent changes and impeccable comic timing - this one woman cast tells the true story of life as a London actor. A play for anyone who has tried, failed or known others preoccupied with 'making it'" (Kate O’Sullivan, Peasoup magazine)
Fundamentally, Making It! is a universal tale of inequality and exploitation, as relevant today as ever, exposed through humour and theatricality.
“It’s a smash!” (The New Current, chosen as Pick of the Fringe)
